The Environmental Safety Specialist is a vital member of our mission.

In this role you will provide oversight of CMC’s Environmental Safety Program. Manages the development, implementation and monitoring of the Environmental Safety Program to reduce waste and maintain compliance with all applicable regulations and standards. Provides regulatory interpretation and serves as a corporate liaison to regulatory/accreditation agencies regarding environmental safety compliance.

  • Assists in the development, implementation and monitoring of the Seven Environment of Care Management Plans and performance improvement activities associated with identified safety risks. 
  • Initiates and reviews corporate safety policies and procedures and required reports.  
  • Assists in staff, physician and contract personnel safety education.
  • Acts as corporate liaison with external environment health and safety agencies and maintains records for compliance.
  • Shares the responsibility of conducting preparedness drills/exercises.
  • Trends and analyzes safety related data to determine safety training needs of staff.
  • Participates in the development, implementation, and execution of safety training programs.
  • Assists in the implementation of new regulatory requirements related to the environment of care.
  • Performs staff knowledge assessments. Provides safety training “toolbox” information to managers, and monitors training progress.
  • Organizes, schedules, and leads a multidisciplinary team on hazard surveillance tours of each CMC facility. Records hazard findings and monitors standing issues until resolved.
  • Monitors compliance in Waste Stream Management, including: Air Pollution, Hazardous Waste, Pharmaceutical Waste, Waste Water, Storm Water and general Land Fill waste.
  • Oversees indoor air quality monitoring and other industrial hygiene functions.
  • Assists in the development of an Environmental Safety Team, to address options and set goals in waste reduction.
  • Reviews and creates corporate safety policies, procedures and required reports under the scope of the program.  
  • Intervenes whenever conditions exist that immediately threaten life, health, the environment or damage to equipment and buildings. Proactively identifies potential safety risks.
  • Maintains membership of multiple safety-related committees—both corporate and facility specific in order to establish collaborative processes that nurture a culture of Safety, and provides reports to these groups that are relevant to the above job duties. 



Minimum required:

Bachelors degree in a Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Safety/Health, Industrial Hygiene, or closely related field. Excellent knowledge of occupational health and safety practices and regulations. 


Masters degree in Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene. Two years experience in the field of safety.


Minimum required:

Must attain CHSP within first two years of employment.


Three to Five years experience in Healthcare Safety. Experience in comprehending, interpreting, and implementing the requirements of regulatory agencies such as Cal OSHA, JCAHO, Cal DHS, EPA/DTSC, Fire AHJ’s. Certification as a Healthcare Safety Professional (CHSP).
