Responsibilities

The RN Critical Care Specialist is a technical specialist trained to manage the ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) system and the clinical needs of patients under the direction and supervision of a licensed, ECMO-trained physician. This includes the management and monitoring of the ECMO machine, as well as circuit management and medical and mechanical emergencies. 
 
This role will care for open-heart surgery patients as assigned and manage other extracorporeal and critical care devices, such as continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), Impella, and balloon pumps. Works closely with a multidisciplinary team to deliver high-quality care and ensure the best outcomes for critically ill patients.

Qualifications

Education
  • High School Diploma, High School Equivalency (HSE) or Completion of a CHS Approved Individualized Education Plan (IEP) Certificate required
  • Bachelor's Degree or higher in a healthcare-related field OR maintains national certification related to nursing specialty required
    • Healthcare-related degrees may be subject to approval by the ACNO/CNO group prior to approval
    • Completion of ECMO Management training course with documented necessary skills as an ECMO Specialist that is validated by the Medical Director within 180 days of hire or transfer into position required
    • Completion of training on CRRT, balloon pumps, and Impella within 180 days of hire or transfer into position required
 
Experience
  • 6 months of open heart experience required
  • Consistent demonstration of proficient clinical nursing practice proficiency required
  • Experience in critical care, with at least one year of ECMO experience required
 
Licenses and Certifications
  • RN - Current and valid Registered Nurse license to work within the state of California required
  • BLS - Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers by American Heart Association (AHA) required
  • NATIONAL - National Certification related to specialty and applicable to role (if qualifying with this option) required
