The Charge Nurse for Community Health System (CHS) has daily oversight and supportive resourcing of the clinical staff and the management of patient care. They serve as the primary liaison for an assigned care area with physicians, staff, patients, and families. They are responsible for coordinating patient flow and staff assignments and the oversight of patient safety, quality, and regulatory activities.
Accountabilities
1. Serves as the primary contact for care area communication.
2. Coordinates patient flow within the care area, facilitates admissions, discharges, and transfers to maximize unit capacity.
3. Makes patient care assignments based on patient acuity, care needs, and staff competency.
4. Coordinates patient care and ensures adherence to safety protocols and evidence-based standards of care.
5. Participates in regulatory activities for assigned area, e.g., chart and environment of care audits, ensuring unit is survey ready at all times. Monitors Pyxis for discrepancies and addresses alerts by the end of the shift.
6. Serves as a liaison for staff/patient/families/physicians and collaborates with the Assistant Nurse Manager/Manager, when necessary.
7. Receives, documents, and attempts real-time resolution of complaints and/or suggestions posed by patients, visitors, and other departments. Refers any unresolved situations to the Assistant Nurse Manager and/or Manager.
8. Provides evaluation/feedback pertaining to unit staff to Assistant Nurse Manager/Manager.
9. Provides coverage as a staff RN, including "at all times" break coverage.
10. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
