Responsibilities

The Medical Assistant 2 (MA2) performs medical or technical procedures within a Medical Assistant's scope of practice and under direction of the physician(s), assists the medical staff and physician(s) in providing clinical and administrative support throughout the medical office and provides guidance/mentorship to the practice's other Medical Assistants.
 
Accountabilities
 
1. Performs high level clerical duties: advanced registration, grant program qualifications, complex medical insurance authorizations and billings, and create and maintains provider schedules.
2. Assists with clinic billing stats and work queues.
3. Assists lead staff with monitoring clinic work flow and operations issues. Makes performance improvement recommendations.
4. Assists with orientation of new staff and staff evaluations.
5. Answers incoming calls. Assesses each caller's urgency and priority and either provides information, takes messages or forwards to the appropriate party.
6. Directs patient check in, complete simple registration and insurance verification.
7. Receives appointment requests, obtains necessary authorizations and makes appointments. Contacts patients with appointment information by phone and by mailing a computer generated letter.
8. Processes provider’s orders upon disposition, obtaining necessary authorizations, making appointments and informing patient of appointment details.
9. Processes incoming and outgoing referrals. Completes new medical record numbers as appropriate.
10. Performs approved procedures, screening, and/or testing, administers specifically approved medications and injections per Medical Assistant scope of practice.
11. Prepares room and/or patient for examination by provider. Gathers and documents patient information per policy.
12. Collects specimens, conducts waived testing and quality control on waived testing and document results.
13. Communicates patient needs to provider, clinical lead or supervisor.
14. Maintains cleanliness in examination rooms, checks for/and remove any outdated supplies and request supplies to maintain adequate stock.
15. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education
• High School Diploma, High School Equivalency (HSE) or Completion of a CHS Approved Individualized Education Plan (IEP) Certificate required
• Completion of a course of study consistent with the requirement for Medical Assistants as specified by the Medical Board of California required
 
Experience
• 1 year of healthcare clerical/administrative support experience required
• 2 years of healthcare clerical/administrative support experience preferred
 
Licenses and Certifications
• BLS - Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers by American Heart Association (AHA) required
• CMA - Certified Medical Assistant preferred
• CPT - State of California Certified Phlebotomy Technician preferred
