Responsibilities

The Dental Assistant provides chairside or operating room assistance to a dentist or oral surgeon. Provides dental care and delivery support by preparing treatment rooms, patients, instruments and materials for oral maintenance, tooth repair, dental implant placement, bone grafting and extractions. Performs clerical tasks related to patient care.

 

Accountabilities

1. Prepares patient for examinations and treatment, including instruments for procedure and assures that dental/medical record are available for the dentist.
2. Assists with dental procedures performed in the operating room, setting up instruments and supplies using standard practices and procedural instruction as a guide when possible. Assists at chairside by passing tools and equipment, preparing and passing filling materials, obtaining and recording vital signs.
3. Maintains inventory and log of local anesthetics used on a daily basis. Maintains inventory in each operatory and treatment room.
4. Provides dental operatory set-up and breakdown between patients while following infection control protocols; sterilize and maintain instruments.
5. Cleans utility room, storage room and patient room properly after each use. Maintains a clean work environment according to OSHA and The Joint Commission standards and infection control guidelines.
6. Assists with conscious sedation procedure in OMFS, support chins as needed by surgeon or acts as the recorder for the procedure.
7. Provides preoperative and post-operative instructions.
8. Assists with dressing changes, suture and arch wire removal.
9. Takes quality x-rays Panorex, Cephs, Laterals, CBCT’s and PA's) as directed by the dentist.
10. Performs impressions as needed for pre-surgical and split patients.
11. Performs daily/monthly checks on crash cart to ensure its proper functionality.
12. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education
• High School Diploma, General Education Development (GED) or Completion of a CMC Approved Individualized Education Plan (IEP) Certificate required
• Successful completion of a Dental Assistant training program approved by the California State Board of Dental Examiners required

 

Experience
• 2 years of dental experience preferred

 

Licenses and Certifications
• Certificate of completion in a course in radiation safety approved by the California State Board of Dental Examiners, which includes theory and clinical application in radiographic technique required
• BLS - Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers by American Heart Association (AHA) required
• RDA - State of California Registered Dental Assistant required
